Surf spots and camp guide

Mehdia Beach is my favourite surfing spot and is one of the most versatile in North Morocco. It lays between a natural reserve Sidi Boughaba and the majestic Atlantic ocean and it’s the cradle of surfing in the Kingdom (the first surfboards reached the ex-US military base in the 60’s).

Surfers can have fun in waves from 1ft to 10ft, and more if they have the guts. Mehdia has multiple breaks ranging from the main spot Moulay Smail (aka Lmoune) a right-hander point break that can provide a J-Bay like conditions (minus the sharks and the crowds), several beachies (Kadouss, Atlantic, Ghouroub, …) A-frames that are perfect for summer and smaller days, Charatane a left-hander river-mouth on a reef (flat rocks and remaining of a sinking ship) that can provide barrels and long rides on bigger swells, with a tricky in-and-out from a rocky jetty and shallow low tides…

My even more favourite place is certainly the Mehdia Surfcamp Morocco, where I can chill, have lunch and rest in between sessions. The place belongs to my best friend Boomy and it is literally a heaven on earth: quiet, lush garden, open dining area, recycled materials and DIY decorations, … I spend all my weekends and after-work summer days there, surfing, eating (Mira is the best cook in the world), swinging in the hammock, living la buena vida…

Boomy is one of the most talented local surfers, and while he ages gracefully, his courage and commitment to surfing gnarly waves is unscratched. Easy going, funny and crazy adventures, he runs the camp like a maestro.

The surf camp is a remaining of the old Mehdia’s 70’s style. It has 2 twin cottages, each one has a living room, a double room, a group room and a shared bath. It also has a private studio with a private bathroom, an open dining area, a counter and a sunny terrasse.

They provide cheap accommodation, the best food in town (even better than some neighbouring towns), surf classes, board and wetsuits rentals, nearby cities tours and even some surf guiding to some unknown and uncrowded spots around Mehdia. Prices are in the cheap to medium range, depending on the services you ask for. The typical beginner package costs $60 per day and includes accommodation, 3 big meals, 2 surf lessons and gear! More on prices here.
